Stem Cells

In multicellular organisms, stem cells are undifferentiated or partially differentiated cells with the ability to transform into various cell types and proliferate indefinitely to produce more stem cells. They represent the earliest form of cell within a lineage. Found in both embryonic and adult organisms, their properties differ slightly depending on the stage of development. Stem cells are often distinguished from progenitor cells, which can’t divide indefinitely, and from precursor or blast cells, which are usually committed to becoming a specific cell type.
